History
Helsingin Meijeriliike (HM) constructed its first building in 1932. Initially, the plot was rented, later purchased, and gradually expanded to cover the entire block. The buildings grew alongside the business. HM operated a chain of dairy stores across Helsinki, which also sold products from its own bakery. The bakery was especially renowned for its excellent mämmi (traditional Finnish dessert). Over time, the initials HM were replaced by the trade name Hyvä Maku (“Good Taste”), and in the 1960s, it became known as Marian Konditoria. The bakery’s delicious aroma of pastries often tempted passersby on their way to work or school to stop in for a donut or a butter bun.
When construction of a telecom building began on the site in the 1990s, efforts were made to preserve part of the original cityscape. The 1930s are represented by the Sturenkatu facade with its chimney, while the base of the building at Teollisuuskatu 11 reflects the 1950s. The style and materials of the new section were designed to align with the historical structures. Construction company YIT renovated the premises into their current form in 2021.
